Tuck and Ruca

A big part of the December move hilarity is going to revolve around bringing two cats into the house with Samson. Kind of a Brady Bunch situation; I’ve had Tucker and Veruca for going on eight years now, and they can be a handful just on their own. But flying them to California and chucking them into close quarters with a big honkin’ dog oughta make for a good story.

I’ll admit, seeing Samson in person gave me pause at first. He’s a big boy; if he wants to go somewhere, that’s where he goes. The cats have speed, manueverability, small size and jumping ability in their favor, but it may take them a while to figure that out. We also still have to figure out how best to manage the dog door, because Tuck and Ruca are both indoor cats and are going to stay that way. So we’re either going to have to install an electronic door for Samson or ensure that the dog door is blocked whenever the cats are free to roam.

When I was in Modesto, there was a moment when Samson was out in the front yard and a kitten went strolling by. He’d never seen her before, and so Kristi and I both were like, how’s he going to react? Chase? Bark? What?

We watched as Samson very gently played with the kitten, nudging her slightly with his nose while she rolled on her back to play with his nose with her paws. She eventually moved on, and Samson let her be.

That’s when I knew he’d be fine with the cats. They’ll be a bit stressed out (“What the heck are YOU?!”) but Samson won’t hurt them. He might get a nose full of Tuck claws on occasion, though.

On Bachelor Furniture, Frozen Fries and Buckaroo Banzai

Ye gods.. the move.

While Kristi and her family are running around getting contracts signed and people paid and plans worked out, I have a move to make happen by the end of November. In some ways, it’s going to be the easiest move I’ve done; 80% of my stuff is staying in Florida or getting thrown out. Most of my furniture is cheap bachelor stuff (a guy just needs a place to sit, you know?) that I bought back in my Verizon tech days, 7-8 years ago. It’s showing its age, so I can Goodwill it all without much remorse. Most of the stuff being moved to Modesto is tech, books, files, kitchen stuff and personal items. My apartment right now is full of cardboard boxes – many scored from the local McDonalds that I live behind – and now the hard job is just sorting it all.

We’re going to end up in December with a garage full of boxes labeled “Chicken McNuggets – Frozen” and “Uncooked Potatoes – Salt Fries!”. Because really.. what’s a modern garage without a mountain of fast food cardboard?

The books are tough calls. A writer plus an English teacher equals a big household library. Most of the paperbacks stay. The rares (including several early Harlan Ellison and Frank Herbert hardbacks), my tech book library and most of my writing books get moved. Kristi’s already laid claim to my copy of Frankenstein; I’m debating about my collected William Blake. Blake’s never really been my thing, but somehow I can’t bring myself to part with it. Right now I’m running a 2:1 ratio in favor of books not being moved, but that may be because I haven’t started on nonfiction yet. Decisions on books like Salem’s Lot are pretty easy.

At least I’m sparing Kristi the Buckaroo Banzai novelization. (And yes, hon, I do own one.)

Hi To All In Modesto

In case anyone was wondering.. the photo up top is Cocoa Beach, a beautiful beach on the east coast of Florida. The first time Kristi flew out to visit, we drove out to Cocoa in a thunderstorm and enjoyed a spectacular evening walking the surf under storm clouds and lightning. That particular stretch of sand (my favorite Florida beach) is about a mile south of where this photo was taken. We’ll be returning this Saturday night.

I wanted to thank everyone (especially the Jepsons and all at Trinity United) who made me feel warmly at home when I visited Modesto recently. I really enjoyed the trip, loved meeting everyone and I’m really looking forward to returning to stay in early December.

Also, while I was in California we met Aaron Draper at Draper Photography. He’s handling the ceremony/reception and engagement photo shoots. I love his work and Aaron himself struck me as a great guy – worth every penny.
