Sprinklers!

So here’s the story. Once upon a time – about 1940 or so – a little house was built on Santa Ana Avenue and somewhere around 2006, after changing hands a few times, was sold to a young woman named Kristi. The previous owners, in a mad rush to boost its value last-minute, ran around throwing together a lot of poorly conceived, adhoc improvements to the property. One such boondoggle was our sprinkler system.

The guys who put it in really didn’t know what they were doing. The lines are about three times as deep as they should be. All the heads are on pivots rather than fixed and stationary. The heads themselves are all wrong – 360 degree sprays, half of which cover the pebble driveway leading out of the garage. And the lines themselves run in a maze all under the yard.

Before we could do anything useful with the back yard, something had to be done about those things. So today Don and Kathy came by and the four of us attacked the back yard – Don and I replacing the main trouble-child sprinkler line, and Kristi and Kathy powerwashing the fences to prep for painting sometime in the next week or so. And I’m happy to report that at least a good chunk of the yard sprinkler system now works perfectly and actually MAKES SENSE, which means that now we can seriously start thinking of what to plant in that area, while we plan our attack on trouble-child sprinkler line #2. We got the worst one down and done today, though. It really felt good to see that line come on and work just the way we wanted it to.

You know, my sympathy goes out to anyone faced with extensive yard care and landscaping work on their home, especially if they’re doing it alone or just with their spouse. It’s tough work and a lot of it. But it’s so much easier when you can get a gang of family on it – everyone knowing that when the time comes for a returned favor on their own yard, we’re only happy to oblige. Family’s good for that.

Laura: I’ll get some photos up soon. I know it’s been a while; I think the “Eugene” hairball was our last. We’ll get a few good shots of the backyard in progress and get them up here for you guys.

Stumpin’, Shovelin’, Barrowin’

We’re having another yard weekend. Yesterday Don (Kristi’s Dad) came by with his gardeners and a stump grinder to help us with our next landscaping obstacle – the rooted remains of a couple of backyard pecan trees that came with the house. They needed to be gone before we can till the soil in the yard corner patches and decide exactly what to plant there, once a handful of available cash escapes the wedding funding vortex.

I think Don and I potting the backyard Strawberry Locust tree out back had a real symbolic impact on Kristi – she’d been wanting to do that since last summer but never had the time. But now it’s done and everything else is a matter of tackling the next job in line. We’ve got the new rose bushes put in out front; they’re starting to sprout, probably thanks to the irrigation system extensions we installed to keep them watered daily. But God, we have so much still to do – plant trees out back, upgrade the sod, rebuild the backyard patio. But we can look at the yard and see that it’s turning into something.

Today she and her mother took a roadtrip into the city to go shopping for the bride’s mother’s dress, while I and my future father-in-law attacked their yard. They’re putting in a new backyard patio, and a whole lot of old sod and soil had to be forked up and out to make room for the stones. So he and I spent the morning fighting clay, roots and debris – Don mercilessly torturing a poor, innocent pitchfork while I wheelbarrowed the gutted remains of his yard out front and up into the back of a trailer. Diet Cokes in hand, we finally hauled the load out into the country, dumped it on an isolated riverbank, and stopped for some Mexican before heading back home to catch up with the women as they returned with their spoils of fashion war.

Tomorrow the bunch of us are back to our yard, this time to rip up and finally fix the backyard sprinklers.

Wedding Update

[ Ed. – Our wedding registries can be found at Williams Sonoma and Macy’s. Just search for either of our names – Robert Warren, Kristi Jepson – in California, wedding date 7/5/08. ]

Back in September (when Kristi and I already knew that a marriage was coming), we both knew that the first half of this year would be a roller coaster ride, but that it’d go fast. It’s hard to believe that it’s already March and that the wedding is only four months away.

Here’s where things are at, since several people recently have asked:

* Kristi’s wedding dress has been selected and purchased. No, I haven’t seen it (though I have seen the veil and shoes).

* Tuxes have been sorted out and are registered at Men’s Wearhouse. Bridesmaid dresses are likewise sorted.

* The general color scheme of the wedding is ivory with navy and cornflower blues.

* We got my ring sorted out in the right size this week. It arrived yesterday and fits perfectly; we’re both very happy now with both our wedding rings. They’re both 14K white gold, mine a brushed comfort fit band. For hers, we chose to buy a pair of diamond anniversary bands, to be soldered above and below her 2 carat diamond engagement band.

* Kristi and Kathy (aka Kristi’s mom) met with the florist yesterday afternoon and worked out our arrangements. We’re going with a general ivory-rose-and-blue motif to match the tuxes and bridesmaid dresses. Kristi says Em will really be the standout, and not only because she’s going to be standing on my side of the aisle. The blue and rose against her black dress will be stunning.

* Kristi, Kathy and I will be going out to the country club tomorrow to talk food and work out venue issues – all the core points of the event. Right now it looks like we’re doing rosemary chicken for the wedding dinner.

* We’ve hired a string quartet to play for the ceremony, and Kristi’s friend Olivia Richardson will sing.

* We haven’t yet settled on a cake design or type.

* After a great deal of back-and-forth between us, we’ve gotten our reception soundtrack together. About four hours of music, starting first with contemporary songs and then moving into romantic standards (Sinatra, Ella, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, etc.) for dinner. We still need to get a CD deck that will plug into the club’s sound system. Em’s husband Jason has graciously agreed to run the music for that evening.

* The hotel rooms have been reserved at the Courtyard Marriott in Modesto and both Chris (my brother and Best Man) and Em Varan (Groomsgirl) have confirmed with us that their plane tickets from Florida have been purchased and their cars reserved. Disa (Maid of Honor) and Janelle (Kristi’s sister and Bridesmaid) are likewise confirmed.

* Disa will be staying in the guest room here at the house. I will be spending the night before the wedding at the hotel with Chris and probably Em and Jason.

* The Jepsons’ bible study group have very graciously volunteered to do the rehearsal dinner, to be held at the Jepsons’ house the night before the wedding. They seriously have no idea how much we really appreciate it, or how much that means to us. Thanks so much, guys.

* The bridesmaid/groomgirl gifts have been selected and purchased, but we haven’t yet worked out gifts for the boys.

* As we’re both concerned about the heat in July (possibly up to 105F and very dry), we think we’re going to go with small paper fans and iced bottled water as table favors. (Our first thought was chocolate truffles, and then we thought, chocolate.. desert summer heat.. fancy dress.. umm.. maybe not.)

* Invitations are being custom designed by Jennifer Duarte of Jennifer Duarte Design, who with some luck will hopefully also be attending the wedding with her husband Matias. (She’s due to give birth to their new daughter just a few weeks before.)

* We plan to drive down to San Diego during Spring Break later this month to meet and visit with Kristi’s cousin Andy, the Lutheran minister who will be conducting the ceremony.

* Honeymoon discussions continue, with a plan not yet firmly nailed down. Originally we talked about honeymooning back in my home state of Florida, but cost issues got us looking elsewhere in California. Our latest idea is to take an Alaskan cruise. I’m sure the plan will change another dozen times between now and July.

* While we plan to spend our wedding night at the Westin in Modesto, we will not be leaving on our honeymoon until a day or two after the wedding in order to see everyone safely on their way home.

I think that about covers it right now.

For those R&K readers still considering attending from out of state, please let us know and we’ll be happy to help you find the most cost effective way to get out here and back. Last night Kristi (who’s a flippin’ genius at this) was looking up ticket prices from Florida; apparently they can still be had right now for about $350-450 round trip per seat, by far the least expensive way to make the 6000-mile round trip. Call and we’ll hook you up. We still sincerely would like you to attend. The only thing that we ask is that you provide a trustworthy RSVP as early as possible, as we still have a ton of decisions to make about the event.

For those out of state R&K readers who wish they could make it but simply can’t, we appreciate the good intentions and love you for it. We wish you could be here. We are still registered at Williams Sonoma and Macy’s, but are happy to receive whatever gift or acknowledgement you wish to offer. We know that many of those closest in our lives cannot conveniently make this trip and we understand their absence.

Halfway there, folks. Halfway there.

Lights Out Everybody

Feb27

Rob Written by Rob

So yesterday afternoon I get a call from our friend Em in Orlando. I’d had a busy day and hadn’t checked the news, so that was the first I’d heard about the massive power outage Tuesday in Florida.

Man oh man. All the way from Miami up to Tampa on the west, and all the way to Jax on the east. And all (apparently, according to Florida Power and Light) caused when a fire took down a Miami substation. The station went down and others tried – and failed – to take up the slack. Even the nuclear plant at Turkey Point shut down, in a cascading grid failure that took out power to millions of people statewide.

I’ve been ranting on this all day. It was 75 degrees in Miami on Tuesday afternoon, and somehow the grid was stretched so far to capacity that a single local substation failure shut down half the state. When I left, monthly power bills had been going steadily up ever since the grid got smashed by four hurricanes in 2004. FP&L and Progress Energy prorated the repair costs over the next several years. So what, did they fix it with cut-up Coke cans and rubber cement? Why in the name of everything good and holy was the grid at capacity in LATE FEBRUARY, AT 75 DEGREES?!

It’s scary that the Florida power grid is that fragile. It’s always been a bit flaky, with the power going out locally with every daily 4pm thunderstorm. But what happens this summer when oil’s trading at $150/barrel, the daytime temperature is averaging 98 degrees and the humidity is over 80%?

Even better: what happens if Florida gets hit by a serious hurricane this fall?

Grumble grumble grumble. The state’s just going straight to hell, it is. And mainly because it’s full of shortsighted, self-interested people who don’t get the relationship between cause and effect. I wonder if it’s still going to be the happiest place on Earth in five years when half the place is in foreclosure, the school system is funded mainly by bake sales and the most popular energy source is a bicycle generator.

It just makes me mad. That blackout should never have happened. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
