Monkey

God, I hate it when good animals are treated badly. What the hell are those people THINKING?

Monkey’s our neighborhood cat. She’s a super-sweet little calico, extremely friendly, always turning up where people are around and working the crowd. We’re pretty sure she belongs to one of our neighbors, but seriously, that cat should not be running around outside. Not with cars going by and the meth head’s kids running around and all the other stuff that can get a sweet little cat hurt or killed. And with the weather turning pretty cold and wet this week, that Monkey’s allowed to roam outside like this is just plain irresponsibility.

She turned up at our back door this morning, being super cute, peering through the kitchen door longingly, with that look that said, can I come in? It’s warm and there’s food in there and people who like kittehs. Please?

We’re going to round her up next time we see her. We probably can’t just kidnap her, but she at least deserves a warm and dry place to sleep.

..grumble grumble..

Annoyances

This week has been a roller coaster ride.  We got home from Florida to find our insurance agent called while we were gone.  Our premiums were set to go up to almost $3400 a year because the California DMV assessed Rob points on his license because of fix-it tickets from Florida.  From 2 years ago.  Tickets that were fixed on time and never assessed points.  He spent all day Wednesday on the phone with Florida’s DMV, California DMV and basically, no one had any answers as to why CA would assess points when Florida didn’t.  We are still fighting with our insurance company and the DMV.

In a highly dignified move, I called the insurance agent on Friday to talk about everything.  I ended up in tears, nearly yelling at her while I sat in a gas station pumping gas before going back to work that night for the busiest and final football game of the year.  Her advice?  Come in and talk to a manager.  We do not hold out hope for much.  Our only solution thus far is to take Rob off the insurance and have him not drive next year.  Not what we were looking for.

THEN (because you know it gets better), Tucker discovered the outside world.  Twice.  In the same day.  The first time, Samson went bonkers barking at something.  Rob looked outside to see what was up and lo and behold, Tuck was on the front porch.  In a panic, he rushed outside, pulling the front door behind him.  But oops! He locked himself outside with Tucker at 7:20am.  He called me from the neighbour’s house and luckily, my mom is off-track this month and could swing by to let him in.  When things finally calmed down and few hours later, Rob did a head count.

Samson?  Check.

Veruca?  Check.

Tucker?  Uh, wait.

Rush around outside in a panic again.  3 HOUSES DOWN THE STREET, Tucker ducks under a car.  Rob gives chase and Tuck runs.  Good thing Rob is faster because Tuck was on the move.  Apparently, he’d gone to visit our neighbour’s house (she had the door open and he just wandered inside) before ambling over a few more houses.

So Thursday meant a trip to the store for batteries for the dog door and then another trip to Target for the special lithium battery for the dog’s collar.  We couldn’t find the manual for the door so the internet to the rescue.  Rob read instructions to me and I sat on the filthy kitchen floor to program the door.  Situation returned to normal.  Tucker cannot figure out why the door no longer holds any magic for him and Samson has only gotten stuck outside once (at 6am this morning).

Yesterday, I was intent to scour the house.  I woke up with a migraine and after a few hours of trying to fight it, I had to take drugs.  I laid down and Rob brought me a cold cloth for my head.  That was at 12:30.  I woke up at 4:45 when my mom called from LA to say they’d arrived safely for their cruise.  (Their 40th anniversary is in February and with the grandbaby coming that week, they decided to go on an early celebration trip.)  It has been a frustrating few days.  Housecleaning has been put on hold until today.

While laying at my feet just now, I totally freaked out the dog.  An advert for some ridiculous psychic children show came on, referencing the whole Sixth Sense (I see dead people) thing.

Me:  (Hissing)  Samson, I see dead people.

Samson:  (Sits upright, looks outside)

Me:  (whispering) I see dead people!

Samson: (growling that leads to a short bark, a quick glare in my general direction) Not cool, Momma.   Dogs don’t like dead people.

Time’s blasting along now. It just doesn’t seem like THAT long ago – nothing like the six months it’s been – since I first flew out to Modesto for a week in October. Or since Kristi was visiting me in Orlando. Now we’re in April, which means in just three months we’ll be man and wife. We’re both looking forward to it, but wow, time’s just flying.

The wedding plans are pretty much complete now. We’re doing engagement photos in a couple weeks, there’s still the cake to sort out, and other odds and ends, but the bulk of our planning now has shifted from the wedding to the honeymoon. Those plans seem to change every day, but that’s fine. We still have plenty of time to decide on that.

In the meantime, we’ve finally almost settled all the outstanding business from my move. Still a bit here and there left to do, nothing major, just things we haven’t gotten around to doing yet. The biggest outstanding issue is probably the storage unit.

I left Orlando pretty quickly, and we didn’t really have the money or time to ship all my belongings to California. So a lot of my stuff ended up with the Salvation Army, my family, or in the garbage. The rest currently resides in a 10×10′ aluminum room in east Orlando: my bike, a 27″ Sony TV, my beloved office chair, boxes full of books and office files and other assorted materials. My brother and I packed it all in, and then I basically just stuffed a couple bags full of day-to-days and got on the plane. I arrived in Modesto literally with the clothes on my back.

So lately I’ve been missing my stuff, especially the books. I have some really good books. So we’re enlisting my brother’s help once again to wander over to the unit and start shipping the boxes over. We don’t have much of a choice about the big stuff, the TV and bike and whatnot.. that’s going to have to shipped heavy. But at least we can start liberating some of the easy stuff from Orlando bondage.

BTW.. have I mentioned lately how much I love my wife (to be)? Well, I do. A lot.

And she got a lot more sympathy from me this morning on an issue of vital importance: the early-morning stench of a freshly dropped Tuck turd. Every morning we have a routine around here. Alarm goes off, Kristi gets up for work, hits the shower, Tuck follows her into the bathroom and chooses that moment to plant a fat juicy one in his corner of the floor. Kristi starts screaming “BABE!!” which is then my cue to get my lazy ass out of bed, throw on slippers and rush into the bathroom at 6am to quickly dispose of it before she faints or worse.

By the time I get into the bathroom, I mean, come on, the smell isn’t THAT bad. It stinks, but aren’t we overdramatizing it slightly?

Turns out, no, we’re not. Tuck waited this morning and instead dropped his load when I was in the shower, and OH MY GOD WHAT THE HECK IS THAT SMELL?!! Does the steam just amplify it?? The wall of nastiness was.. oh god.. hold breath.. hope it passes.. sweet god in heaven.. it took a couple minutes before the smell got back down to where it usually is by the time I wander into the bathroom for cleanup.

That girl must really love me. Starting her workday every morning to that. There just no way I can ever let that kind of dedication get away.
