Mountain Dew and Ritalin

The title of this post comes from a line from a very funny and accurate comic strip over at The Oatmeal that we quote often around here. Any romantically attached adult who delves into the online multiplayer game world should be able to relate.

I seem to be nearing the end of yet another flirtation with the world of EVE Online. I’ve had these accounts going now for almost three years, and each cycle seems to be a bit shorter than the last: at first I played for about a year before hanging it up and letting the account go inactive, now I’m down to about three weeks. Basically, I fire up my exploration Anathema for a null sec adventure when I’m not distracted by anything else – and there’s always some other game ready to capture my attention. XCOM. Civilization. Fallout Shelter. Fallout 4.

And the thing is, I really want to love EVE Online, the way I do love Fallout. So what’s the deal? I’m starting to suspect that it’s an adulting thing.

Staying Chipper

He doesn’t write an entry for months and then writes two in two days? What the hell is THAT about?

One of the tougher truths of adult life that I’ve had much difficulty fully grasping over the years is that the universe isn’t designed to make us happy. It just isn’t. In childhood, it seems like happiness just shows up, like food and water and air. And for kids – for whom everything is brand new, and usually have parents delivering said happiness on a platter – that’s how it works. But grownups don’t get that luxury, and that sucks. We have to work for it and make our own.

Luckily, there are plenty of tools and building materials around for the job, for those willing to take it on. For me, a big part of it is just having a fun project or two to work on, something goofy and creative that has nothing to do with Adult Work. It keeps me chipper when the grind of Adulting is proving a bit much to deal with.

If you want to see one of my current fun projects, I’ve also lately been writing a fan blog about the Fallout video game series, focusing in particular on my own adventures playing the Fallout Shelter mobile game. Kristi will probably cringe a bit to see the mention here, but hey. You get your fun where you find it.

The other thing that’s been helping me stay level this week has been listening to early 20th century popular music on Pandora. I defy you to stay in a bad mood while listening to the Andrews Sisters, early Sinatra, Bing Crosby and Benny Goodman. You just can’t.

Happy Hallowrain!

Rob Written by Rob

So as we sit here on this early Halloween night, it is raining here. We like that. California desperately needs the rain, to be sure, but I have high hopes that an evening shower will pretty much kill trick-or-treating. We stopped handing out candy a couple of years ago, weary and annoyed with the four-hour parade of rude kids, teenagers with babies, and bused-in crowds from four neighborhoods over. So now we spend Halloween night doing what we do pretty much most nights: dinner, TV, maybe a movie, and video games until bed.

Rain it out, rain it out, WAY OUT!

So lately my video game rotation has been evolving. I’m about to go inactive on Eve Online – too little interest, too many griefers, and I’ve been mostly bored with it this year. And I’m tired of working the points up every month just to keep the account alive. So I’ve been playing other things – Civilization V as always, and my modded-to-shit Fallout build, but recently I’ve been digging back into fanmade games.

Sorry for prolonged silence here at R&K.  It’s been one of those periods where it seems like all kinds of crappy things happened in rapid succession and it was honestly too hard to write about it all.
