Married: Robyn and Andrew!

We know – neither of us has written here in several weeks. We’ve been horribly busy, pushing out product almost as fast as it’s been coming in; between the business, various church and family-related activities and obligations, and all the other presses on time and energy that come with everyday adult life, we’ve been running exhausted and on fumes for weeks now. So we’ve been looking very forward to getting out of town for a few days and celebrating a very happy event: the wedding of Robyn Taylor and Andrew Heise.

Andrew and Robyn Heise, September 18 2010

Robyn is Kristi’s cousin; Kristi’s mother is the older sister of Robyn’s father. It’s hard to do justice to how well loved Robyn is in the Taylor (and presumably, the Heise) family. She’s funny, smart, full of life. When Kristi and I were married in 2008, Kristi’s grandfather gave the blessing and publicly called Robyn out: you’re the next one to be married, he said. She was terribly embarrassed. But we spent the weekend joking with him about who he was going to call out this time – because obviously, the blessing stuck.

Luckily, Andrew is a great guy. A perfect match for Robyn’s energy, wit and grace. We’re all so very happy for them both.

So we all piled up in our respective vehicles and tooled over to Lake Tahoe, Nevada this weekend for the Saturday wedding. The weather was beautiful, the bride was stunning, and the reception party was a riot. Rocking to the tunes of DJ Diamond Dave Hosley, we all had a blast dancing into the late hours. Tellin’ ya, you haven’t lived until you’ve seen a 60-ish wedding DJ pounding out “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga:

(Thanks to Matt and Shelly Taylor for being so quick on the iPhone cam!)

Thanks for inviting us – we had a great time. Congratulations Andrew and Robyn!

As a side note: we’re working on something today for Andrew and Robyn, and are coming up with a list of songs Dave ran on Saturday night. Anyone who was there and out on the floor, what songs do you remember best? What were your favorites? Leave a comment – thanks!

Echoes, Shades and Spirit Hairs

It’s been a long, strange week since Tuck left us. It started with questions that we didn’t want to answer. Tuck’s box – leave it out for now or put it out in the garage? His pill bottles and syringes are still in the bathroom as I write this. It somehow seemed wrong to just come home and start clearing the house of the last of Tuck’s presence.

Echoes and shades surround us. Tuck always had an outsized personality, stubborn and willful, affectionate and troublemaking. On top of that, his medical care over recent years had required all sorts of accommodations and adjustments, adaptations that eventually became ingrained as habits that still persist. The house is full of Tucker ghosts.

Farewell, Tucker

For me, a new normal came into being a little over five years ago.

I lived in a little apartment in Altamonte Springs, Florida, recently moved back from Tampa after a longer stint away from my hometown than I’d expected. Tampa was often a pretty lonely time, which was a big part of why I adopted a second cat to begin with. The first one – Veruca – was a plea from a friend who had too many animals and needed to rehome one in a single-cat house. After a few months (and many long worked weekends) I told myself that I needed a second cat to keep the first one company. But honestly, it was really more about keeping me company.

Tuck was always trouble. He’d lock himself in the bathroom. Rummage through cabinets, in search of treats. Knock things off desks and tables that got in the way of his happy reclinage. He was way too smart for his own good, and nothing about him was ever according to the manual.

Gibson

Assuming you haven’t been stranded on a desert island in recent weeks, you’ve probably heard about the latest Mel Gibson meltdowns. The tapes of Gibson screaming obscenities, threats, and just generally being completely freaking out of control – a bizarre mashup of animalistic barks and gutteral tirade that just gets worse, the longer it goes on. And the media has been abuzz over the end of the Gibson career, while some folks out there are asking what the big deal is.

They point out that Alec Baldwin was caught on tape a few years ago, screaming at his 11-year old daughter that she was a “thoughtless pig”, and Hollywood forgave him. Why is Gibson’s situation different? Or is it just because Gibson is aligned with conservative Christiandom, while Baldwin once famously declared that he would move to France if Bush got reelected? Is this just lefty Hollywood bias at work?
