Sometimes you have a big story to tell, and sometimes there’s just a bunch of little ones. We’re not living particularly dramatic lives at the moment – no complaint there – but a number of little wheels are rolling forward. So it’s time for a general round up here at R&K.
• After a bunch of months sleeping in on Sunday morning, we’re starting again at a new church, Modesto Covenant. We’ve only been a couple times so far, but we’ve enjoyed it and we know people there. We’re still wary, and it’ll be a long while before we’re up for anything other than the investment of a Sunday hour. But it’s nice to be somewhere healthy, growing and not nearly as dysfunctional as our last place.
• The business is going well. Things aren’t as crazy as they’ve been in the past, and I have a habit of always looking at the project board and worrying that there’s not more work there, but it always seems to shake out by invoicing time.
• I’m gradually starting to gather ideas and material to start my own writing blog. It’s just something I’ve been thinking on more and more lately; I’ll read something online or have a stray thought in bed late at night, and think, this would be a great writing craft article. Sometime soon I’ll sit down and get that moving.
• My low-caffeine-intake routine continues. I’m now down to a cup or less a day, and little to no caffeine otherwise; the other day Kristi and I ate lunch at the Village Bakery, and I had to catch myself before ordering a Coke with my sandwich. No Coke, Snapple. We’re sleeping better hours, but low caffeine still means I’m generally a bit sleepy most of the day. But the anxiety volume is turned way down – where it was screaming at me constantly at 11 or 12, now it’s about a 1 or 2. Concerned but not panicking. The chest pains and shortness of breath are gone, head’s clearer and more focused, and I’m just generally feeling a lot better.
• We got Kristi’s wedding ring back from the shop yesterday, and it looks great. The old one lost a prong about a month ago, and instead of trying to save it – it wasn’t the best quality band in 2007, the money went to the rock – we decided to set the stone in new and better ring. Thanks to Sam at Edwards Jewelers for another round of beautiful work.
• We’re eagerly awaiting the release of Bioshock Infinite on Monday. Damn, I need something to believe in: Dead Space 3 sounds disappointing, I hated the new Tomb Raider, GTA 5 has been pushed off until late this year. Bioshock Infinite sounds and looks great, and we’ll buy it on release date, but it better live up to its promise. Not that I mind spending my free time playing Civilization 5 (new expansion pack coming this summer!), and Kristi’s starting to get into Dust 514, but we’re both burning time waiting for the big releases. It could be worse, though. We could have been big SimCity fans.
• The Google Reader situation is giving me cloud pause. Not that Reader was all that great, or that it wasn’t super easy to just switch to something like FeedDemon Pro for my RSS feeds, but really Google. You kill off Reader and then want me to migrate my Evernote data over to your brand new Keep (itself a replacement for Google’s now-dead Notebook app)? Which you may kill off in a few years if you’re not happy with the profitability of your free service? Hey, I respect the right to eliminate products that aren’t adding to the bottom line. But don’t expect me to take the long term availability of Google services seriously, particularly regarding a new and untested offering.
• We’re gradually getting a handle on Sam’s skin issues. Baths twice a week (sheer hilarity for all involved), antibiotics and antifungal meds that Sam has to be tricking into taking, and he goes back in for his next vet visit in a week or so. He’s scratching/chewing less and the fur is growing back into his bald spots. I also find that Clean Sam appeals to me, even if giving him a bath is a pain in the ass.
• We’re really looking forward to our upcoming Hawaii vacation, which is now fully paid for. Rented house in Kaua?i, blue Pacific, warm sun, white sand. Counting down the days.
All in all, life’s not bad.
